Why It’s Important To Set Weekly/Monthly Goals

Without goals, you are direction less. You’re basically navigating through life without a plan of where you’d like to go. Goals are the oxygen to your dreams. Without goals your dreams will die over time.

This past week has been full of ups and downs. I’ve been busy and stressed about managing my time effectively. Being a full time advertiser and a part time entrepreneur has its challenges. One of the main things that keeps me sane is setting appropriate goals and holding myself accountable. My dreams keep me grounded. When I’m stressed about completing my goals, I remind myself that these goals will one day lead me to each of my big dreams. When I’m so overwhelmed that I can’t think rationally, I lean on my support system to steer me in the right direction. The reason most people don’t achieve their dreams is because they give up instead of working through obstacles. I believe that there are three main reasons people don’t become wealthy or achieve their dreams in general. One, they don’t have the proper mindset. Two, they fail to set concrete goals. And three, they fail to execute.

No matter how much you plan, you’ll never know exactly what curve balls will come your way. Expect change at all times. It’s inevitable. No day is completely predicable. People who are organized and strategic are better prepared for the unexpected. These type of people have an easier time adapting to change when it occurs. Studies show that only ten percent of Americans set goals every year. Of that 10% who set goals, 90% of them control the resources of the world. Generally, people who don’t have concrete goals get used by people who have them.

High achievers who conquer life have clearly defined goals that they work towards daily. Goals give your life meaning and purpose. These people feel more energized because they have a reason to work hard every day. If you work a 9-5 like me, remember that you’re not working for the person you report to. You’re working on your skills, your connections, and your work ethic. You have the power to define your purpose and live up to it daily. Ask yourself; do you want to live like an owner or a renter of your life? Renters plan what they have to do to get by. Owners invest in themselves. They strategically plan their life and value their time.

Not only is it vital to establish goals but also you have to write them down to make them stick!

Setting goals stops you from becoming complacent. Setting small goals is an excellent way to help you reach your large goals. I always had big dreams but often lacked the “how to.” Setting daily and monthly goals brings me closer to fulfilling my dreams. Let’s say you have a goal to write a best selling book.  However, the thought of writing a whole book is scary; start by writing a section. Set a daily goal to write one page of the book, or set a weekly goal to write a chapter. Next thing you know you’ll have a book written and edited in about a year. This example can be applied to any dream you have. As a part-time entrepreneur, I have to set daily benchmarks. If I don’t I either don’t get much done off my to do list, or I spend so much time worrying about all the things I have to do that I don’t do anything on my list.

Goals give you something to strive for. Be the driver of your life, otherwise life will just drive you.

This week I’d like you to:

  1. Spend one day planning your goals for the upcoming week
  2. Write out 100 things you want to accomplish before you die
  3. Make a clear list of the goals that will help you obtain your top dreams
  4. Set daily/weekly deadlines for each of your goals
  5. Document your progress. It will keep you motivated when you’re feeling doubtful
