In honor of Black History Month, I thought it would be beneficial to promote some local black restaurants in NYC. I was watching a documentary called She Did That on Netflix last weekend and I was so happy to hear that black women are the fastest growing group of entrepreneurs. The film also offers an up-close and personal look at black women entrepreneurs and addresses topics like the funding gap for women of color.
Hearing about how large the funding gap made me realize I can do a much better job at supporting black owned businesses. A recent report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City reveals that 40% of black women who request financing don’t receive a single penny. Which is nearly twice as many as white women who are turned down. I may not have the money right now to fund a black owned business but I can be more conscious about spending my money with them.
